Despite Omicron creating a short-term impact, vaccines are expected to be available in early 2022. Polish Catholics had nothing to do with residential schools, and John Paul II reached out graciously to Aboriginal people. It grieved me to listen to a representative of a Polish Catholic church say that the defacing of a statue of the late Pope John Paul II (who is venerated as a Saint, particularly among people of Polish descent) felt like a stab in the heart. They are also stirring up strife at a time when what is desperately needed is peace-making and healing. The people behind the mindless slogans and damage to property have committed crimes. As an Anglo-Quebecer, it did my heart good to hear her say that she will spend time in her other official residence – the Citadelle in Quebec City – as well as at Rideau Hall, which she called ‘the People’s House.’ As one not ordinarily given to complementing our current prime minister, I have to say that it looks as though this time Justin Trudeau picked a winner. It was wonderful to hear one of our Aboriginal languages being spoken in the halls of government, and also to hear the valiant efforts to use both our official languages by a lady who has been criticized for her lack of French. It was a joy to watch this seasoned diplomat take the oaths and then deliver an inspiring speech that highlighted, among other things, reconciliation between our first peoples and the rest of Canada. I’m writing this on the day that witnessed an historic event-the installation in Ottawa of Canada’s first Inuk Governor General Mary Simon. The last few weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster for those of us who love this country.
