Not that the second half doesn’t matter entirely. And the first half alone is worth the ticket price.

Still, all said and done, the movie is carried extraordinarily by the performances. The narrative takes a predictable turn and reminds one of past movies of the director in the way the screenplay progresses. The ‘Usthad’ seems like a continuation of “Jaadu Ki Jhappi”, “Get Well Soon”, “All Is Well’, “Wrong Number”. The bittersweet moments are less, and the “Hirani” magic formula shows up and gains prominence as the narrative progresses towards the end. The problem comes in what we onscreen which is a total whitewashing of Sanjay Dutt. The second half feels dull, only in comparison to the excellent first half, otherwise, it too is very engaging. The Raju Hirani effect of bittersweet movie making whereby one simultaneously laughs and cries at the same time is at display in this half. The first half is fantastic with numerous memorable scenes and terrific acting moments that stay with us even after the completion of the movie.
The moment flashback starts, one is interested in the proceeding, and the director gives them a break only at the interval mark. The thing to remember though is that the comparison is only among his movies and the fact that Sanju might not find a place is merely a reflection of the high standards. We have to say Sanju too would be placed along with his previous outing.
The first three are widely regarded as classics the last one didn’t get the cut. However, the good thing is that he has managed to make each of those movies truly special. Sanju is the fifth films he has made in fifteen years. Raju Hirani is arguably India’s best director working today. It is bound to get awards galore in the year-end awards season. Some of them look like he has done in the past, the crying and other stuff, but still, nothing gives a repetitive feeling, and he shines. In both the halves, there are multiple occasions where one is just awed by the act put on by Ranbir Kapoor. However, in time we get so engrossed on what is happening on screen, one totally forgets Ranbir Kapoor and solely focuses on his onscreen avatar. It will take some time initially to get used to the actor playing another still existing ‘actor’ on screen. Ranbir Kapoor playing the role of Sanjay Dutt delivers his career-best performance. Ranbir Kapoor plays the titular role, and the focus is on the drug addiction and bomb blast phase of the senior star.
Sanju, as the title says is the biopic of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt.
